Introduction

In null security space, many new career opportunities arise, allowing new players to gain access to some of the most lucrative activities in EVE Online. Ratting is one of the most vanilla careers you can partake in, and is one of the easiest. Although it requires a bit more skillpoints than mining, ratting is a wonderful career for pilots who want to make a decent income while watching Netflix. Not only is it easy, but it is scalable! Although you may start off in a navy cruiser, you might find yourself all the way up to a supercarrier!

Skill Plan

Here is a basic skill plan that will get you into the Vexor Navy Issue, a powerful drone boat that can easily earn you a respectable income. Faction drones are a great starting point, but getting your Tech II heavy drones are a wonderful expansion to this career path.

Ships

Vexor Navy Issue

This is the cheapest entry-level ratting vessel, and can easily earn a new player between 30m-45m ISK/HR. The Vexor Navy Issue uses heavy drones, which are a bit more skill point intensive, and traditionally is speed-tanked, although we will introduce a normal tanked Vexor Navy.

The only trick to ratting is the tank, you must take into account your local rat-type, and use the appropriate resistances. EVE University has a wonderful table.

Each dropdown has additional information about the fit, know how your fits work or you’ll die in a glorious fire!

Rattlesnake

The rattlesnake is the ultimate expansion opportunity for any ratter, and is generally the first step towards carrier-like ratting income. Most rattlesnake pilots can easily earn 70-90m ISK/HR in bounties alone!

With the Rattlesnake, you will easily be able to run escalations, allowing you to pull in hundreds of millions of extra ISK!

The Technique

Escalations

Escalations are message popups you receive at the end of your site, updating your in-game journal with a new expedition. These expeditions lead to D.E.D complexes, which offer opportunities for increased loot.

If you are a new player, we suggest that you simply sell your escalation bookmarks to some of the veterans in your corporation.

Scaling

The next step for scaling your ratting income would be a carrier, and most people will point you to the Nidhoggur. If this interests you, keep an eye out for a carrier ratting guide! Usually, it’s best to just contact your local carrier ratter.
