Introduction

In wormholes, every career gains a new method that is more dangerous than its high security space counterpart. Due to the danger, these activities are usually the most lucrative areas for new players to get involved in, and the most fun. Today we will be taking a look at gas harvesting, an alternative to ore and ice mining.

This is not a guide to gas harvesting. This is an informative post about the career, and will include skills and ships required to be successful in the career. To learn more about the actual process, you will need to do further research.

The Details

Gas harvesting is one of the fastest methods to become rich as a new player in EVE Online. It was one of my first careers, and I made several billion in only a couple of months exploiting the riches of wormhole space. Gas harvesting is the best skill point investment in the game, as you will be able to reach 50 million ISK per hour with only 256,000 skill points. The only thing that will come close to that investment is exploration!

Not only is it one of the best moneymaking methods for new players, but it is EASY! Gas mining is done in the venture, making the losses much cheaper than barge mining. The initial investment is a little steep, as the skillbook costs 20-30 million ISK, but you’ll make that money back in no time!

The Skills

Gas harvesting is the only real skill you need to be able to dive into this lucrative moneymaking method. We suggest that you start out by training the following,

Starter Skills

Mining IV
Gas Harvesting I
Gas Harvesting II

This will allow you to start making cash! After that, we highly suggest you finish up Gas Harvesting to V so you never have to look at it again, and you bring in the real money.

We suggest you scan down your gas sites in a scanning frigate, and then go grab your venture to harvest. The core probe launcher on the venture is only for emergency situations! Also, while the Prospect may seem appealing, we personally feel that it is going a little too deep, and you’d be better off training combat skills for other professions.

The Technique

Ninja harvesting is a common technique used by new players who do not have the force to kill sleepers.

After 15 minutes of warping to a gas site, sleepers will spawn and try to rip your ship apart! The best way to avoid this is to simply warp off on a 15 minute timer, right before the sleepers spawn! This will also allow you to gauge how long you have been harvesting. Below is a video that we found on YouTube that displays this technique.

Another method would to be to phone a friend and have him clear the gas site of sleepers after they spawn, as they do not respawn. Call up the biggest, baddest dude on your friends list! If you have none of those, add me in-game, BearThatCares!

Conclusion

Gas harvesting should be one of the first moneymaking methods you adopt as a new player, as it teaches you how to embrace danger and losses in EVE Online. Not only is it an easy entry into wormhole space, but it will teach you valuable skills in survival after you get hunted a few times.
