AFK Ratting

AFK ratting is an extremely easy income source for newer players in EVE Online. Learn how to safely AFK rat, as well as the tools you’ll need for the job.

Most players know that making ISK in EVE Online isn’t really the most fun thing to do, and seek out as many passive isk faucets as possible. While many players will tell you that you need to be laser-focused for everything, it’s just not realistic. AFK ratting is by far the most approachable ISK method for entry-level players, and it really doesn’t have many drawbacks. In this guide, we’ll talk about how you can rat safely, and minimize the amount of time you’re looking at the EVE window.

NOTE: There is risk whenever you undock in EVE Online, and AFK ratting in nullsec will definitely lead to some losses. However, I’ve never met anybody that wasn’t profitable.

Foreword

Before we even get into the nitty gritty, some things need to be clarified before I get crucified.

  • AFK activities do not make more ISK than active activities.
  • AFK activities will lead to death, however, it is usually infrequent.
  • By AFK, I don’t mean off bowling. You still need to be in your chair to some degree.

This guide is not for,

  • People who live in very active null security systems.
  • People in highsec/lowsec.
  • People who quit the game after a single loss.

Now that we’ve gotten the disclaimer garbage out of the way, let’s get cooking.

The Ship

To get started with AFK ratting, let me introduce your new friend, the Vexor Navy Issue.

Notes

  • One can make up to 20m ticks with this bad boy.
  • If you’re struggling tanking, replace the Drone Navigation Computer to a resistance module.
  • The cyno is for fun. Why not generate content?
  • This is for Guristas space. If you’re elsewhere, change your tanking modules & drones.

Usage

  • Pick Forsaken Rally Points & Hubs. Leave the Havens to people actually paying attention.
  • Orbit something at 30km+ (a wreck, object, not a rat)
  • Drop your drones, you’re good to go.

Common Problems

  • If rats are attacking your drones, warp off to a planet, eject from your ship, and get back in.

This bad boy will your friend for the rest of your AFK career. You’ll be able to make up to 60m/hr per character, which isn’t too bad unless you’re a bitter vet. Most importantly, you don’t have to look at the screen.

The Tool

Obviously, you can’t just AFK rat without something helping you out. Let’s introduce Near.

Before I get dogpiled,

  • Near is not against the rules. It just reads your intel channels for you.
  • If bots are reporting your intel channels, you’re an a%#.

What does Near do?

  1. Reads your intel channels for you.
  2. If something is in a nearby system, it will tell you that there are hostiles.
  3. When you’re done with a site, it will tell you to move onto the next one

Setup

For setting up Near, I highly suggest you simply read the instructions on the website.

Wrapping up

With a ship that you don’t need to pay attention to, and something assisting you with reading your intel channels, you can easily make some passive income while you’re writing up that lab report, or writing a worthless guide on how to make passive money in EVE Online.

Although I’m an advocate for sucking up all the ISK you can, I highly encourage you to use some of that ISK to blow things up in PvP, or create some content by moving into more active areas with your newfound wealth.

Have fun!

A word to the wise, make sure to have your drones set on “focus fire”, I went for a shower and lost a ship because the muppets were attacking 3 different targets and were effectively being tanked!
